Perhaps more confusing than eligibility and financial is recruiting.
Whether or not students can visit a college or be visited by a college
coach, receive mail, phone calls or e-mails from a college coach changes
from day to day, sport to sport, division to division.

For the most part, the responsibility of paying attention to the legislation
and informing families about the legislation rest with the college coaches.
But it is not always easy for college coaches to communicate these
regulations to high school student-athletes and their families because of
some of the communication restraints that are placed on college coaches
    by the legislation.

Below is a basic thumbnail sketch of some of the regulations to help
    navigate the recruiting process.

Contact - A face-to-face encounter between a college coach, high school
student-athlete, parent or guardian that 1) takes place anywhere other
than the respective coaches campus and 2) any conversation beyond
"hello" takes place.  A contact can take place at home, at school or at any
place the high school student-athlete is practicing or competing.

Evaluation - A review of the academic record or athletic ability of the high
school student-athlete by any college coach is classified as an evaluation.
It can be done by visiting the high school to talk to counselors, coaches,
teachers, etc or watching high school student-athletes practice or
    compete.

Dead Period - High school student-athletes, parents or guardians may not
have any face-to-face contact on or off a college campus with a college
coach during the designated dead period dates.  The dead period
generally occurs around the signing day and national championship for
    the respective sport.

Official Visit - A college pays an part of the expenses for a visit to its
campus for a high school student-athlete.  High school student-athletes
have a maximum of 5 total visits - one person college and cannot be made
prior to the first day of class of senior year.

Unofficial Visit - The high school student-athlete, parent or guardian pays
the expenses to visit a college campus.  High school student-athletes may
take an unlimited number of these visits and may visit any campus as
often as he or she wishes.

High school student-athletes may call or write college coaches as often as
they wish.  However, don't be put off if a message has to be left and the
coach doesn't return the call.  Regulations preclude them from calling or
writing high school student-athletes until a certain time and even when
they are permitted they are limited by the number of times they can call.
